{"id":1667303,"date":"2022-09-16T09:21:42","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T13:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress-1016567-4521551.cloudwaysapps.com\/?post_type=station&#038;p=1667303"},"modified":"2022-09-16T11:48:59","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T15:48:59","slug":"half-life-2-vr-mod-launches-today-on-steam-bringing-free-vr-support-to-valves-classic-adventure","status":"publish","type":"station","link":"https:\/\/platodata.io\/plato-data\/half-life-2-vr-mod-launches-today-on-steam-bringing-free-vr-support-to-valves-classic-adventure\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Half-Life 2\u2019 VR Mod Launches Today on Steam, Bringing Free VR Support to Valve\u2019s Classic Adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress-1016567-4521551.cloudwaysapps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/half-life-2-can-scaled.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main\">\n                <\/aside>\n<p>The long-awaited VR mod for <em>Half-Life 2 (2004)<\/em> is available for free in beta starting today, bringing to the iconic Valve title a near-native level of VR immersion we\u2019ve been waiting for.<\/p>\n<p>In case you didn\u2019t catch our recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadtovr.com\/vr-mods-news-monthly-september-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VR Modding Monthly<\/a> article, here\u2019s the lowdown: development on a VR mod for&nbsp;<em>HL2<\/em>&nbsp;began nearly 10 years ago, although due to work\/life\/everything the&nbsp;lead developer had to sideline work on the mod after moving to Rockstar Games.<\/p>\n<p>Last year though, modder Cabalistic joined Wormslayer and the rest of the Source VR team to finally bring <em>Half-Life 2<\/em>&nbsp;in its entirety to VR. Today, it launches on Steam in early access <em>for free<\/em>. Granted, you\u2019ll need a copy of the game to play, but <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/220\/HalfLife_2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you can get that in various bundles<\/a> at a very reasonable price.<\/p>\n<p>[embedded content]<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a full list of features coming at launch, taken from <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/658920\/HalfLife_2_VR_Mod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mod\u2019s Steam page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"bb_ul\">\n<li><em>Full room-scale VR with tracked motion controls. Physically walk around, pick up objects and climb ladders the way that only Virtual Reality allows<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Intuitive and realistic weapon interactions, with quick and easy weapon switching via a radial menu, ammo storage over your shoulder, functional iron-sights, two-handed weapons, and manual reloading<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Control options including; full left-handed support, a laser sight, and arcade style \u201cquick reload\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Comfort features like motion vignette and 3rd person vehicle camera. (Note: there is currently no teleport movement option)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Playable on any VR headset which is supported by SteamVR<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team also has <a href=\"https:\/\/halflife2vr.com\/roadmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a roadmap<\/a> so players can keep tabs on new features and bug fixes too. Here\u2019s a taste of what the team has in store:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_center\">\n<p>While we certainly cannot \u201cremaster\u201d HL2 to look like a game developed in 2022, we are working on overhauling assets and textures by a combination of AI upscaling and manual touches to give them that extra bit of detail and sharpness under the VR headset that is missing from the original. All updates are intended to stay faithful to the original. Additionally, all maps in the game will get a facelift and are being improved with updated lighting, more details and bug fixes in addition to VR-centric adjustments like smooth stairs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019ll be following along when the mod drops later today. At the time of this writing there\u2019s only three hours left until we can jump in, which just won\u2019t come fast enough.
