In a statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/congress\/budget\/2023\/01\/12\/republicans-eye-pentagon-savings-after-mccarthy-spending-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chairman Mike Rogers<\/a>, R-Ala., said the committee will focus on \u201cimproving our national defense at a time when our nation is faced with unprecedented threats from our adversaries \u2014 including an increasingly aggressive China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Rogers has also said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/20\/fixing-disability-and-retirement-pay-is-congress-next-big-vets-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">military personnel issues<\/a> will be a major focus for the committee, and announced the formation of a \u201cservicemember quality of life\u201d panel to be led by Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Committee officials did not release details of the panel\u2019s planned scope of work, but Rogers said it would be in keeping with \u201csupporting our servicemembers and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Rogers on Wednesday also announced his slate of subcommittee chairmen for the 118th Congress, who will work with him to set hearing and policy priorities for the next two years:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list__StyledUnorderedList-hx0rva-2 hYLtfs\">\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Tactical Air and Land Forces \u2014 Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va.;<\/li>\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Strategic Forces \u2014 Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo.;<\/li>\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Seapower and Projection Forces \u2014 Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Miss.;<\/li>\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Cyber, Innovative Technologies, and Information Systems \u2014 Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wisc.;<\/li>\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Military Personnel \u2014 Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind.;<\/li>\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Intelligence and Special Operations \u2014 Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich.;<\/li>\n<li class=\"list__StyledListItem-hx0rva-0 ezBsET\">Readiness \u2014 Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Bergman is the only subcommittee chairman who did not serve as the ranking member on an Armed Services panel last year. But nearly all of the subcommittees will see differences in Republican assignments from last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Kelly served as the ranking member on the Intelligence and Special Operations subcommittee last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Wittman was the ranking member on the seapower panel last year, but now will oversee Tactical Air and Land Forces issues. His district is home to numerous military bases as well as the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Gallagher and Banks have swapped Republican leadership on their respective subcommittees. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who reportedly pushed Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., for a subcommittee chairmanship on Armed Services during McCarthy\u2019s protracted speaker bid earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Gaetz\u2019s push to end all U.S. aid to Ukraine makes as an outlier among other Republicans on the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 kEzXdV body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Democratic lawmakers have been allotted 28 seats on the committee this session.
