{"id":2011254,"date":"2023-03-13T10:40:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-13T14:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress-1016567-4521551.cloudwaysapps.com\/plato-data\/u-s-space-force-budget-hits-30-billion-in-2024-proposal\/"},"modified":"2023-03-13T10:40:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-13T14:40:00","slug":"u-s-space-force-budget-hits-30-billion-in-2024-proposal","status":"publish","type":"station","link":"https:\/\/platodata.io\/plato-data\/u-s-space-force-budget-hits-30-billion-in-2024-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Space Force budget hits $30 billion in 2024 proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress-1016567-4521551.cloudwaysapps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/u-s-space-force-budget-hits-30-billion-in-2024-proposal.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 President Biden\u2019s $842 billion budget request for the Defense Department for fiscal year 2024 includes $30 billion for the U.S. Space Force, the largest funding request to date for the military space branch.<\/p>\n<p>The $30 billion request is $3.7 billion more than what Congress enacted for the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/congress-adds-1-7-billion-for-u-s-space-force-in-2023-spending-bill\/\">Space Force in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe largest space budget ever,\u201d DoD said in budget documents released March 13 on the Biden administration\u2019s funding request for the coming fiscal year that begins Oct 1. The proposed budget \u201cprocures and modernizes capabilities to secure the use of space in the face of increasing threats to U.S. national security space systems,\u201d the Pentagon said in budget documents. <\/p>\n<p>Most of the increase proposed for the Space Force is for the development and procurement of missile-warning satellites, and for launch services.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1 \"> @media ( min-width: 300px ) { .newspack_global_ad.scaip-1 { height: 250px; } }  <\/aside>\n<p>The Space Force\u2019s $30 billion budget request includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$19.2 billion for research, development, testing and engineering (RDT&amp;E)<\/li>\n<li>$4.7 billion for procurement<\/li>\n<li>$4.9 billion for operations and maintenance&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>$1.2 billion for military personnel&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Big increase for LEO satellites, space launch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The heftiest increase is in the RDT&amp;E account. Funding for low and medium orbit missile-tracking satellites nearly doubles from $1.2 billion in 2023 to $2.3 billion in 2024. The Space Development Agency\u2019s low Earth orbit data relay constellation gets $2.1 billion, or more than double the 2023 funding.<\/p>\n<p>In the procurement category,&nbsp; \u201cthis year it\u2019s all about launch,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Michael Greiner, deputy assistant secretary for budget.<\/p>\n<p>DoD is seeking $2.6 billion for launch services for 15 missions, compared to last year\u2019s appropriations of $1.7 billion for 10 missions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The $2.6 billion for launch includes $2.1 billion for 10 National Security Space Launch (NSSL) traditional geostationary and medium orbit missions, and five launches for the Space Development Agency\u2019s LEO constellation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The NSSL and SDA launches are reported in separate budget lines at the request of Congress, Greiner said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018We have to make a transformation\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Frank Kendall, the top civilian leader of the Air Force and Space Force, said the 2024 budget is \u201cfocused on trying to stay ahead of the threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re most concerned about is the pacing challenge from China and their military modernization program,\u201d Kendall told reporters. \u201cYou\u2019ve been hearing me <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/kendall-if-china-cant-beat-the-u-s-in-the-air-it-will-try-in-space\/\">speak about<\/a> this ad nauseam for the last couple of years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to this challenge, said Kendall, \u201cwe have to make a transformation to next-generation capabilities. And it\u2019s a journey,\u201d he said. \u201cTime is our greatest concern. We did a lot of work over the past year to analyze those problems and look at various ways to try to address them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Specifically in the space domain, said Kendall, the 2024 budget begins a transition to a more diversified satellite architecture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Frank Calvelli, assistant secretary of the Air Force for space acquisition and integration, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/space-force-not-buying-large-satellites-for-the-foreseeable-future\/\">has directed the use of smaller satellites<\/a> that can be built faster and cheaper than traditional large satellites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re moving in that direction,\u201d Kendall said. The Space Development Agency\u2019s missile warning and data transport constellations \u201care the two obvious examples,\u201d he said. Meanwhile, \u201cwe\u2019re still sorting out what our future is going to be in programs like GPS and some of the other communication systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Space Force is \u201cbenefiting from what\u2019s happened in the commercial world, because a number of commercial companies for business reasons are going to less expensive designs,\u201d he said. This means \u201cmore proliferated, more affordable architectures that are also more resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Space Force budgets have steadily risen since the service was established three years ago. Its first budget in fiscal year 2021 was $15.3 billion, and it grew to $18 billion in 2022.
