Call of Duty: Warzone now has 100 million players, Activision has announced.
It’s an impressive number for the free-to-play battle royale, which launched in March 2020. As I argued last month, love it or hate it, Warzone has changed Call of Duty forever.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of EA’s announcement that Respawn’s free-to-play battle royale, Apex Legends, also has 100 million players.
100 million players and counting.
Thank you all for dropping in. It wouldn’t be #Warzone without you. pic.twitter.com/knanptnCMU

How does that compare to battle royale leader Fortnite? Epic hasn’t trumpeted player numbers for some time now. In May 2020, Fortnite had an eye-watering 350 million players. Has it grown since then? Plateaued? Declined? Apple seems to think there’s waning interest in Fortnite – although Epic has countered those claims.
Warzone is of course about to nuke its map, ushering in a 1980s-themed version of Verdansk with the beginning of season three.
