- Cybercriminals are targeting gamers with Crackonosh “mining malware”
- $2M worth of Monero lost resulting from Crackonosh mining malware
Crackonosh malware aided the theft of the cryptocurrency Monero (XRM). In detail, the thieves stole $2 million worth of Monero. There were illegal Monero-mining malware accounts for more than 4% of the XMR in circulation. More so, it has created $57 million in profits for cybercriminals.
As per Avast:
The main target of Crackonosh was the installation of the coinminer XMRig, from all the wallets we found, there was one where we were able to find statistics. The pool sites showed payments of 9000 XMR in total, that is with today prices over $2,000,000 USD.
An estimated 220, 000 users worldwide faced the consequences from this Crackonoch mining malware. Furthermore, Brazil, India, the US, and the Philippines are acting as Crackonosh hotspots. Authorities say around 800 devices are infected on a daily basis. These figures only account for those that have Avast Antivirus installed on their devices.
Crackonosh a Crypto Mining Malware
According to Avast, Crackonosh uses the computer’s processing power to mine Monero for hackers. Apparently, Crackonosh disables antivirus programs on machines.
Users become victims when they download and install games through torrent sites. Specifically, the Crackonosh malware attacks through free versions of games like NBA 2K19, Grand Theft Auto V, Far Cry 5, The Sims 4, and Jurassic World Evolution. These games are available to download on torrent sites.
Infected users might experience a noticeable slow down in computer performance or even higher than normal electricity bills warns Avast researcher Daniel Benes. Even more, he notes that that the problem would persist as long as people continue pirating.
“As long as people continue to download cracked software, attacks like these will continue to be profitable for attackers.”
