Technology major IBM and Indian Institute of Science ( IISc) announced the launch of the IBM-IISc Hybrid Cloud lab in Bengaluru to advance research in hybrid cloud technologies. The faculty and students of the premier institute will work alongside the IBM research scientists to conduct research for organisations in adopting hybrid cloud and AI.

An in-house study by IBM on hybrid cloud reveals the hybrid value derived from multi-cloud platform technology is 2.5 times of what it would be from a single cloud, thus leading business to invest in hybrid multi-cloud platform to drive business transformation. The Hybrid Cloud Lab is set up in focus to solve toughest research challenges faced by enterprises in scaling the adoption of cloud computing across industries. It is said to commence with initial projects on several areas – to build autonomous self healing computing systems, to adopt micro services and optimise cloud-native applications, to create AI based information management and to develop AI systems that can analyse human and machine languages. IBM said the lab will serve as a hub to foster exchange of ideas between research and industry community.

“IISc has a strong record in research areas like Hybrid Cloud, AI, Security, which compliments the expertise of IBM Research, and we are excited to collaborate with IISc to create innovative, industry relevant solutions. Our Hybrid Cloud platform is Open, and we will jointly develop open-source software that provides interoperability, portability, and security that can be easily accessible to the vast community of developers to accelerate innovation,” said Gargi Dasgupta, Director, IBM Research India.

Navakanta Bhat, Dean, Division of Interdisciplinary Sciences, IISc Bengaluru said that making the joint research findings open source and accessible to a wide community will significantly accelerate innovation in the emerging areas of AI and Hybrid Cloud.

The industry-academia partnership is based out of their 15 year old relationship on exchanging knowledge through guest lectures, collaboration in form of open science program, internship opportunities and more. The duo recently in 2020, had conducted the ACM Winter School on Hybrid Cloud to provide deep understanding of cloud computing.
