Inflation jumped throughout Europe in October, running at an annual pace of 4.4% in the European Union and 4.2% in the U.K., data released Wednesday showed. The U.K.’s Office for National Statistics said Thursday that consumer prices rose at the fastest pace in 10 years, significantly more than the 3.9% expected by both a Reuters panel of economists and the Bank of England. Although inflation rates are similar in the U.K. and the euro area, the Bank of England and the European Central Bank are likely to draw different policy conclusions from the data.
