SpiceJet Employees Continue Their Protest, Spreads to Nine Cities

The protests by SpiceJet engineering staff which started in the national capital of India have now spread like a wildfire across 9 other cities in the country. The protests are being held by the employees in demand of restoring their salaries and leaves. The operations of the airline are bound to be affected by the step. Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Cochin, Patna, Pune, and Hyderabad are the cities where employees have chosen the path of protest.

Status of the Protests

According to a report from ET, reports came in of employees not showing up for work during the morning shift and the people on the night shifts are complaining after they complete their work. One of the protesters told that the protests are happening for a very simple demand that is the restoration of salaries and leaves. He talked about how the industry is returning to normal and it’s about time that they received their dues.

Another protester told that the payment was being given on an hourly basis to the employees and they were not receiving their usual day-offs. According to a report, the employees are being only 60% of what their usual salaries used to be. The employees in Delhi said that they received the payment on Saturday, however, the employees from Ahmedabad didn’t receive their payments.

A spokesperson from SpiceJet said that they are looking into the matter and talking with the protesting employees to come to a term. He said that the flights are now operating normally but a section of employees have issues that are being dealt with. Contrary to this, an employee said that they have talked to the higher authorities and no step was taken by them for the situation, and the protests will continue.

The aviation industry was one of the worst affected sectors due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, with the recent decline in the Covid-19 graph and ease of restrictions, passengers are coming back to travel in numbers and the condition of the sector is improving each passing day. But most of the airlines are still struggling with the accumulated losses. The absence of engineering staff due to protests might not affect the airline directly but will hinder its operations and smooth functioning.
