After a year delay, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story finally has a trailer. The new movie musical is a remake of the 1961 classic and based on this trailer, which debuted Sunday during the 93rd Academy Awards, it seems Spielberg is keeping quite a few things faithful to the original.

The trailer spends a bit of time setting up the plot of the movie, which is basically Romeo and Juliet with two rival New York street gangs subbing in for the lovers’ royal feuding families. But for obvious reasons, the focus is on the singing and dancing.

The trailer gives us brief glances at some of the musical’s most famous songs like “Dance at the Gym” and “Tonight,” which all seem to share the original version’s theatrical scale and beautiful colors. The trailer also spends a bit of extra time recreating the original movie’s fantastic intro.

Spielberg’s remake stars Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Tony, the show’s Romeo stand-in, and Rachel Zegler as Maria, its Juliet. The film also stars Ariana DeBose (Hamilton), Mike Faist (Dear Evan Hansen), and Brian d’Arcy James (Spotlight, Shrek The Musical). Rita Morena, who won an Oscar for her role as Anita in the original movie, will also return for the remake in a new supporting role.

West Side Story is set to release in theaters on Dec. 10. It was originally scheduled to premiere in December of last year, but was delayed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
