The story
VoloCity is the electric aircraft of urban air mobility company Volocopter. It is one of a range that is designed to relieve today’s heavily fossil-fuelled, inner-city traffic for both people and goods.
This futuristic aircraft is scheduled to take flight in 2024. In order to properly train the number of pilots required to meet expected demand, Volocopter has turned to aviation training provider CAE and a range of technological solutions, including virtual and mixed reality.
The innovative training programme for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) operations will use CAE’s AI and virtual and mixed reality technologies, as well as data analytics, to prepare and train pilots.
In response to Volocopter’s projected pilot demand, CAE has committed to investing up to $40 million in instructors, technology and course materials.
As part of the agreement, CAE will deploy training equipment and instructors in lockstep with Volocopter’s growth. The company will also purchase a simulator for training certification.
CAE will also create new, student-centric courseware, specifically designed for eVTOL training and provide pilot trainees with customised resources to make the process as quick and efficient as possible.
On top of VoloCity, Volocopter’s aircraft for people, the company is also developing VoloConnect, and VoloDrone for goods.
