On Thursday, 23 September 2021 twitter announced that it would allow tipping on its platform allowing its 350 million active monthly users to tip each other in bitcoin and a variety of means.

If successful, this may mean more largescale adoption of bitcoin, as well as more growth for the lightning network which has already seen tremendous growth in the second half of 2021 as the number of channels has increased to 65,323 and expanded their capacity by roughly 78%, from 1,800 to over 2,379 BTC, based on data from 1ml.

Some of the main takeaways from the announcement were:

Twitter would be rolling out the tipping feature it had been testing since May, 2021 to iOS users and it will be introduced to Android systems soon.

Twitter users will be able to use the payment app strike to send and receive bitcoin.

Twitter is also developing a feature that would allow users to authenticate nonfungible tokens, which some Twitter users already use as their profile pictures — a decision the company said is intended to support digital artists.
