The story
Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) has revealed the complete 2021 line-up for VIFF Immersed, a showcase of the power of extended reality (XR) technology as a dynamic vehicle for storytelling.
VIFF Immersed is made up of two must-attend online exhibitions: Immersed International Competition and Exhibition, taking place from 1 to 11 October, and Immersed XR Market, which is scheduled for 4 and 5 October.
All VIFF Immersed content will be available for free across Canada and internationally via online XR platforms, with panel sessions presented on YouTube.
Accessible on VeeR, Oculus TV, rad., YouTube360, Facebook 360, Kreis Immersive, and Museum of Other Realities, VIFF Immersed Exhibition offers a widely accessible festival experience for XR content.
There will be a total of 32 works featured across the Immersed Exhibition and XR Market, including five world premieres, four North American premieres, five Canadian premieres, and two British Columbia (BC) premieres in the exhibition.
Kinga Binkowska, creative engagement producer, comments: “VIFF is not only about celebrating the greatest in contemporary cinema, it is about looking at the innovations that lie ahead for the art form.”
“And there is perhaps no more exciting opportunity for storytelling than XR. As adoption of this technology grows at a rapid pace, with nearly 18% of the US population now utilising virtual reality (VR) headsets monthly, we are thrilled to continue our annual showcase of artistic visionaries at the cutting edge of the form.”
VIFF Immersed Exhibition highlights include the Canadian premiere of Namoo by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Erick Oh; the North American premiere of Symphony VR by Igor Cortadellas; the Canadian premiere of The Passengers: The Kid by Ziad Touma; and the BC premiere of Inside COVID19 by Gary Yost.
