Warhammer Age of Sigmar Christmas Boxes: Are They Worth It?

Alongside the Warhammer 40k Battleforces, the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Christmas Boxes have been revealed as well – but are they worth your money?

The holiday season brings tons of reasons to be excited about. The festivities, Christmas, the New Year – and of course, new Warhammer Battleforces! After the 6 boxes showed for Warhammer 40k, it’s time for the 4 ones that were revealed for Age of Sigmar, providing reinforcements to the armies of the Mortal Realms.

Usually, these Christmas Boxes are at a great price for their contents, but how good of a deal are the new AoS gifts that Papa Nurgle brought us? We’ll once again go off of the prices of the official Games Workshop webstore, as well as the $150-200 range of last year’s Christmas Boxes (depending on location).

Warhammer Age of Sigmar Christmas Boxes – Are They Worth It?

Seraphon – Primordial Starhost

The Order box for this year contains some angry lizards ready to destroy the slaves of Chaos. Even though the Seraphon have got a range refres, and Army Box and a new Vanguard in the last few months, they are the stars of one of the factions this Christmas. But how worth is the Primordial Starhost for players that want to start or expand their Seraphon armies?

The Seraphon Battleforce contains:

• Slann Starmaster – $85
• 3 Kroxigor – $60
• 3 Aggradon Lancers – $60
• Hunters of Huanchi – $60
• 10 Saurus Warriors – $60
• Total value: $325

The Primordial Host boasts an impressive Slann Starmaster and some of the best new sculpts of the Seraphon refresh that happened earlier this year. The points value of the Seraphon Christmas box is also incredible, as the Primordial Host gives out more than half on and army thanks to the Hunters of Huanchi box and the high points cost of the character.

The points of the Primordial Host:

• Slann Starmaster – 290 points
• Kroxigor – 160 points
• Aggradon Lancers – 190 points
• Hunters of Huanchi with Dartpipes – 130 points
• Hunters of Huanchi with Starstone Bolas – 80 points
• Terrawings – 70 points
• Saurus Warriors – 180 points
• Total points: 1100 points

If you’d want to play the Lizardmen of Age of Sigmar, the Primordial Host is an incredible entry point for the army!

Slaves to Darkness – Warhorde of Eternus

The Seraphon hate nothing more than Chaos, whose servants want to plunge the work into darkness, by handing it over to their dark overlords. The Warhorde of Eternus is made up of the warriors of Be’lakor, the First Prince, who are trying to seize control over the forces of Chaos, taking them over from Archaon. The box consists of a very well-rounded force, ideal for starting the Slaves to Darkness faction.

The minis in the S2D Christmas Box:

• Eternus, Blade of the First Prince – $60
• 5 Chaos Knight – $65
• 3 Ogroid Theridons – $65
• 5 Chaos Chosen – $60
• 10 Chaos Warriors – $60
• Total value: $310

While not as good a value as the Seraphon Battleforce, the Warhorde is also well-worth the $150-200 pricetag that these boxes usually come with. Eternus can also be built as a Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, which means that the box is great for players that already have a Slaves to Darkness army, but want to expand their forces.

Let’s look at the points values of the Warhorde of Eternus:

• Eternus, Blade of the First Prince – 180 points
• 5 Chaos Knights – 220 points
• 3 Ogroid Theridons – 150 points
• 5 Chaos Chosen – 230 points
• 10 Chaos Warriors – 180 points
• Total points: 960 points

While the Slaves to Darkness Christmas Box doesn’t give as many points as the Seraphon one, 960 is still pretty good value for just one Battleforce. You can also pair this box up with basically any miniature from the S2D range, letting you expand in any direction you want!

Ossiarch Bonereapers – Praetorian Spearhead

Alongside the Grand Alliance of Order and the Grand Alliance of Chaos, the Grand Alliance of Death receives some love in this holiday season. First up, the Ossiarch Bonereapers join the fray with an incredible box showcasing some monstrosities who are here to exact Nagash’s will.

The minis in the Praetorian Spearhead costs:

• Arch-Kavalos Zandtos – $60
• 5 Kavalos Deathriders – $60
• 20 Mortek Guard – $60
• 1 Gothizzar Harvester – $60
• 4 Morghast Archai – $70 for 2
• Total value: $380

This box has by far the best value out of the showcased ones so far, as Games Workshop decided to double up on the Morghast Archai, putting 2 kits of the giant skeletons in the Praetorian Spearhead instead of one.

The points are also really nice for the Ossiarch Bonereapers Christmas release, let’s take a loot at them as well:

• Arch-Kavalos Zandtos – 190 points
• Kavalos Deathriders – 190 points
• 20 Mortek Guard – 260 points
• Gothizzar Harvester 160 points
• 4 Morghast Archai – 440 points
• Total points: 1240

The minions of Nagash got ain incredible box in terms of points value as well, as they are sitting above the Seraphon one by 140 points – a whole unit. The Praetorian Spearhead is an incredible entry to the hobby for anyone looking to get some skelly bois – I just wish they were released now for Halloween instead of Christmas. For the spooks.

Soulblight Gravelords – Vengorian Court

The 4^th and last Christmas Battleforce is for another Death faction, the blood-sucking Soulblight Gravelords. Even among the vampiric hordes, the Vengorian Lords are even more bloodthirsty, as they no longer cling to their nobility, instead they embrace the ferocity that comes with being a vampire.

The contents of the Vengorian Court box are:

• A Vengorian Lord/Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares – $70
• 5 Blood Knights – $70
• 20 Deathrattle Skeletons – $60
• 10 Dire Wolves – $60
• 3 Fell Bats – $60
• Total value: $320

While not as big of a discount as the Ossiarch Bonereapers box, the Soulblight Gravelords will also have a merry Christmas. They potentially get double the value they spend on the Battleforce releasing in the holiday season.But is the Vengorian Court a good deal in terms of points? Let’s find out!

The points value of the Vengorian Court:

• Vengorian Lord – 300 points
• 5 Blood Knights – 230 points
• 20 Deathrattle Skeleton – 220 points
• 10 Dire Wolves – 150 points
• 3 Fell Bats – 90 points
• Total points: 990 points

Even though the Soulblight Gravelords box doesn’t give as much in terms of points as some of the previous Christmas Battleforces, it’s still almost 1000 points, which is perfect for smaller games, and for the basis of the army. The Vengorian Lord is an incredible character, capable of healing themselves and a friendly monster around them, which makes it a great piece to hold the midfield.

Sadly, only 4 Christmas boxes were announced for Age of Sigmar as opposed to the 6 boxes revealed for 40k. Still, the forces of the Mortal Realms will have a nice holiday season, as their boxes are much better in terms of points. If you were considering starting AoS, the next few months might be the best time to do so!
